Mokokchung to become ‘plastic free’ by year end


Dimapur, June 18: In an effort to make Mokokchung town “plastic free” by year end, several resolutions were adopted today in a consultative meeting attended by the representatives of all the 18 wards under Mokokchung municipality under the aegis of the All Wards Union Mokokchung, Swachh Bharat Mission Mokokchung District ambassadors and the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) held at MMC Conference Hall. The meeting was chaired by MMC Administrator and ADC Mokokchung, W. Manpai Phom with Nagaland Swachh Bharat Mission state brand ambassador in charge of Mokokchug, Supongmeren Jamir and Mokokchung SBM chairman MB Longkumer as special guests.
After discussing on a wide range of issues, the house adopted several resolutions including the making of Mokokchung town “plastic free.”
To this end, the house resolved to ban all single use plastic carry bags in the town with effect from October 2, 2019 and to ban selling of packaged drinking water bottles below 1 liter by September end. Meanwhile, it was also resolved that use of plastic bags below 50 microns will be strictly prohibited as per standing order of the state government and that punitive fines would be imposed on defaulters. The MMC was entrusted by the house to work on the modalities for the implementation of the resolutions adopted today and necessary public notification floated in time. The house also resolved to restrict connecting of septic tank outlets to open streams and drains with immediate effect.
Earlier, the house observed a minute of silence as a mark of respect and paying homage to the departed soul of Vizopal Chaya, State Brand Ambassador in charge of Phek district who passed away on Saturday last. SMB Mokokchung meanwhile has also conveyed their sincere condolences to the members of the bereaved family.
