Kohima, March 9: Former minister and newly elected BJP MLA, Mmhonlumo Kikon was today sworn in as the pro-tem speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Governor P B Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mmhonlumo Kikon in presence of Additional Chief Secretary, Temjen Toy at Raj Bhavan here.
As the pro-tem speaker, Kikon will be chairing the first day of the budget session of the new 13th NLA on March 13, which will have NDPP-led People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) Government comprising of BJP, NPP, JD(U) and Independent in the ruling bench and Naga People’s Front (NPF) as opposition members.
This is after four years that Nagaland Assembly will be having MLAs in the opposition bench because the last 12th House though had 8 Congress members as opposition they started supporting the then leader of the House, T R Zeliang during the show of strength in February 2015 and later merged with ruling NPF the same year.
However, this time NPF which had been in ruling for the last 15 years will be sitting in opposition bench.
Former Chief Minister, T R Zeliang accepting the defeat had told the media persons here that NPF will play the role of a ‘constructive opposition’ in the Assembly.
The first day of the session will witness election of the new Speaker and administering of oath to the elected members of the House. (Page News Service)
