Dimapur, May 23: The NDPP has sought disqualification of NPF candidate for the Lok Sabha bye-election, C Apok Jamir for violating Model Code of Conduct.
In a complaint to the Election Commission of India, NDPP general secretary Benjamin Lorin alleged that Apok Jamir presented a Mithun (Bos frontalis) to the Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur, the apex body of the Ao community in Dimapur, on May 20.
The Mithun so donated was distributed amongst the Ao community of the ASTD with minute detail and coverage to reach the leading community members of the Ao community of Dimapur, the complaint alleged.
According to the NDPP, the presentation of live animal when the MCC is in force is unlawful and such unwarranted action of a candidate is a clear case of inducement, tantamount to bribe to ask the Ao community of Dimapur to vote for him. It is also a clear case of inducement for strengthening the relationship between the candidate and the Ao community of Dimapur during an election process, it said.
NDPP further said it is a clear case of appeal to a communal feeling for securing votes also done with the intention to garner the votes of the Ao community of Dimapur on communal lines and thereby communalizes the election process.
