Naga Hoho, NPMHR, ZSUN condemn his “kidnapping & brutal killing”

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 23: A day after the brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai, the former President of Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN), political parties in Manipur have demanded a high level probe into the case of “kidnapping and killing” of the Naga leader.

According to reports, Abonmai was found shot dead near a stone crushing unit between Tamei and Tamenglong in Manipur on September 22, after being whisked away from a function of Chief Minister N Biren Singh at Tamenglong.
The Working President of Manipur Congress, I Hemochandra said it was a case of total failure of the State machinery to protect a person who was working for peace and integrity of the State, a report by UNI stated.
It is surprising how a man can be kidnapped from a function where the Chief Minister was present, he added.
Another Congress leader, K Meghachandra said a probe should be initiated to investigate the matter. He said after immediately hearing the news of the kidnapping, Abonmai’s son filed an FIR at Lamphel Police Station. His son had alleged that his father was kidnapped by members of NSCN (IM).
The leadership of Left Parties in Manipur viz. CPI, CPI (M), RSP and AIFB met on Thursday at Irawat Bhawan, BT Road, Imphal. The meeting strongly condemned the kidnapping and killing of Abonmai.
The Left Parties demanded a high level enquiry into the kidnapping of Abonmai from a high security zone and killing afterwards.
Meanwhile, various organisations have condemned the killing of former President of Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN).

Naga Hoho
“While the Naga civil societies were struggling all these years for unity and reconciliation among the Nagas, it is a disturbing and unfortunate to hear the news of fratricidal killing taking place within the Naga family. Whatever be the rhyme or reason, the killing of Lt. Athuan Abonmai, the former President of ‘Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN)’ is a cowardice act and deserves condemnation by every right thinking citizen”, stated a press release from Naga Hoho.
Every political group must not forget to respect the people’s sentiments to avoid killings, kidnapping or unnecessary harassment to the innocent public, it maintained, and appealed to all political groups to shun the path of violence.
In a separate statement, the Zeliang Students’ Union, Nagaland, condemned the “gruesome and cold-blooded murder”, and urged the Manipur Government to speed up pace in nabbing the culprit(s) and give befitting punishment at the earliest.
“Such barbaric act does not have a place in civilized societies. We call upon all right thinking citizens and organisations to come forward and condemn such barbarism”, it stated and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) has condemned the kidnapping and brutal killing of Athuan Abonmai on September 22at Tamenglong.
“Life is a gift from God and in a society rule of law and justice must prevail to protect the sanctity of life.
“In a region where people carry and bear a brutal history of conflict and violence, we are pained at how torture and killing of civilians by both State and non-State actors has devastated our land and our homes”, it said in a press release.
Stating that no justification will help salvage the dampened wound caused by the action of the perpetrators, the NPMHR appealed to all sections of society to remain vigilant.
“Our anger and condemnation must not deprive the due course of justice for victims of such senseless killings. No amount of justification will exonerate what was done to Abonmai”, it said and expressed deep anguish and condolences.
