Dimapur, January 27: The Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organization (NVCO) has termed the lease system of collecting toll and utility fee in Dimapur introduced by the Dimapur Municipal Council and the Municipal Affairs Department, Government of Nagaland as ‘illegal’.
NVCO president Advocate Kezhokhoto Savi said the lease system is “simply multiplying illegal collection” of cash/tax in Dimapur, the commercial hub of the State.
This system of practice is possible only when certain builders/companies invested in the construction of roads or bridges out of their own resources and then the Government can allow them to collect toll tax to recover their expenditures in constructing public roads or bridges, he said.
He was speaking at the 22nd annual general meeting-cum-picnic of the Kohima District Truck Owners & Drivers’ Union (KDTODU) on January 25 at New High Court site, Meriema on the topic “Illegal taxation on highways”.
Savi highlighted the Government standing orders and High Court judgement & order in banning illegal collection of cash at check-gates and on any highways. He appreciated KDTODU for their role in fighting against illegal collection of cash and even submitting a representation to the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima and a setting up a committee to enquire into illegal taxation at the check-gates and on highways.
KDTODU legal advisor Anungla Longkumer exhorted the gathering saying that every driver must keep complete vehicle document and up to date insurance and not to drive under the influence of alcohol.
Earlier KDTODU president Riivese Sokha led the annual general meeting. A new team of office bearers was also elected led by Riivese Sokha as president, Zie-o Angami – vice president, Kiivethi Puro – general secretary, Mhalezo Riipreo – joint secretary, Dziesetuo Huozha – treasurer along with a new team of action committee and audit committee.
