Dimapur, November 17: The Earth Care Awards (ECA) is a joint initiative of JSW and The Times of India group which recognizes the actions and innovations for climate change mitigation and adaptation by communities, entrepreneurs, large scale industries, women led enterprises and urban bodies.
The Land Resources Department, Government of Nagaland and People’s Science Institute, Dehradun have been jointly declared as the winner in the ‘Community Based Mitigation and Adaptation’ category of the 9th Edition of the JSW-TOI Earth Care Awards. The award was given on November 13, 2019 at Delhi.
The Land Resources Department launched springshed pilot projects in 11villages, one pilot project in each district during 2016-17 in technical collaboration with People’s Science Institute (PSI), Dehradun. Thepilot projects have been taken up where communities faced critical water shortages and water quality issues. The objective is to rejuvenate drying/dying natural springs through recharge of the underground aquifers by employing appropriate engineering, vegetative or social interventions.
This community led springshed management initiative by Land Resources Dept, Nagaland and PSI Dehradun have been identified and shortlisted as one of the contenders by the panellists of JSW-ToI ECA 2019.Two technical consultant from Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) engaged by JSW-ToI had undertaken site verification of the works carried out under pilot project for rejuvenation of springs at Thizama village, Kohima district on September 16 & 17, 2019. After thorough examination and eliminations, the Springshed Pilot Project undertaken by LRD Nagaland-PSI Dehradun was voted the winner of ECA 2019 under the ‘Community Based Mitigation and Adaptation’ category.
The award was given away on November 13, 2019 at New Delhi which was received by Kethosituo Sekhose, Deputy Resident Commissioner, Nagaland House, New Delhi on behalf of the Department.
