Lamhainamdi killings: NPF demands time-frame to solve case

Nagaland News

DIMAPUR, MARCH 24: As public outrage at the brutal killing of 3 persons at Lamhainamdi village on March 22 grows louder by the day, opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) has demanded a “time-frame” from the Rio-led government to book the culprit(s).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party maintained that if the State Government fails to bring the case to light within the specific time-frame, the Home Minister should resign on moral ground.
“Such merciless inhuman killing of innocent lives is not acceptable in the society and rightful punishment should be awarded to the killer/killers,” the NPF stated while pointing out that the situation could have been averted had the State Government been more sincere and vigilant.
It is learnt that the situation within that vicinity had been tense since the past days, the party reminded and questioned if Nagas should start considering themselves unsafe in their own land.
“The party, while appreciating the State Government for setting up Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, demands the Government to give specific time duration to its people to settle the matter and book the culprit,” it stated.
The NPF wondered whether the PDA Government is aware of the many random killings, extortion, corruption and many other criminal activities taking place in the state, “or whether they consider this unrest in the State as a trend to be ignored”.
It reminded the Government that it is their duty to provide security as well as to deliver justice to its people. The party demanded justice to the victims within a specific time, and also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members.
‘Machine guns over logic’
Terming the killing as a blot in the history of Nagas, Leader of Opposition TR Zeliang said that it was an act of cowards, who under the veil of guns, attempt to push their “personal twisted agendas and suppress the rights of innocents.”
A press statement from Zeliang stated that the gun culture still practiced by a few unscrupulous people has no place in modern society and should be condemned by all right thinking citizens.
“The State Government should grasp the severity of the case and leave no stone unturned to book the culprits in order to come out of the era of lawlessness in our society. If we are threatened to live in our own land, what is to become of our society? Would those having more number of machine guns be right no matter the logic and reasoning?” it read.
The opposition leader, who is also a former chief minister, said that the tragic incident should be a wakeup call to all the sensible and right thinking citizens, regardless of tribes, religion and political affiliation, to re-evaluate and introspect the way of functioning of “these parasitic elements in our society”.
It is time to collectively stand against the culture of intimidation and flexing of might through the barrel of the gun, he maintained.
While condemning the “savage act”, Zeliang extended condolences to the bereaved families.
