Dimapur, July 22: Kohima police informed that one Khusato Keyho (25), son of Vesato Keyho of Khutsa village under Phek district was arrested along with a mobile phone in connection with the extortion on July 4.
PRO DEF Kohima said the accused has admitted to committing the crime and named an accomplice in the commission of crime. Efforts are on to nab the absconding accused.
With regards to the assault and extortion case on July 9, police said in the process of investigation, it has been established that three miscreants were involved in the crime; the prime suspect has been identified as Kevidetuo Angami from Kohima village, a habitual offender with criminal record. Police said the person is evading arrest and all out efforts are on to nab the main accused and identify the remaining accused.
SDPO (N) Kohima police is supervising the case and a look out notice has been issued against the main accused.
SSP Kohima, Kevithuto Sophie assured that all out effort would be made to take the investigation to a logical conclusion.
The SSP Kohima also stated that reports of extortion and highway robbery was reported beginning from the last week of May, as the State Government announced partial relaxation of lock-down. Based on various inputs, Kohima police started operations in the month of June and registered three criminal cases in North PS. Based on the strength of the cases registered, Kohima police busted a criminal gang of highway robbers and arrested 5 persons.
They are Viketouzo alias Baby (37), son of Lt. Ruokuovolie of Zhadima village, presently a resident of Lower PWD, who was arrested on June 12; Renpemo Tsopoe (24), son of Y. Ntsono Tsopoe, a resident of Midland colony Kohima arrested on June 17; Ase-o Kense (27), son of Pfusiesa Kense of Touphema village, presently a resident of Phezoucha colony, Kohima arrested on June 16; Mongchao Khiam (29), son of Yanso of Nokhu village, Tuensang, a resident of Thizama village arrested on June 16 and Khosato Keyho alias Kenny (25), son of Vesato Keyho of Khutsa village, Phek District, a resident of PWD (Lower) Colony, Kohima arrested on July 4.
Police said all the five arrested persons were caught with extortion slips, weapons and ammo and other incriminating articles and materials.
Kohima police suspects that the assault and extortion incident on July 4 & 9 were carried out by fringes of the same criminal gang.
