Gideon Leo scores hat-trick as New Market blanks United 16
Kohima, August 13: Gideon Leo (99) scored the fourth hat-trick of the tournament as New Market Football Club blanked United 16 FC Lerie to move to third position in the Kohima Football League-2 organised by Kohima Town Club at Local Ground here.
New Market FC defeated United 16 with the three goals scored by Leo in the first half.
He opened that account with a powerful right footer in the 3rd minute while in 9th minute United 16 tried a long ranger through Wanghe (9) but New Market custodian Sedevituo Seretsu (1) was alert enough to neatly deny him the equalizer.
In a disappointing moment for New Market, defender Longshebemo Tungo (2) penalty shot was brilliantly blocked by United 16 custodian Nughato Sumi (81). Referee awarded the spot-kick as Rhitsho Mero (10) was pulled down inside the D’box by rival defender and skipper Athuo (2) in 23rd minute.
However, two minutes later Leo scored the second lead into an empty net as defender failed to clear the ball while custodian Sumi was up to collect the ball.
In the 29th minute Mero missed the opportunity to increase the tally despite coming one on one with rival custodian. Referee had to penalize skipper Athuo unsporting behavior in the 32nd minute.
The 39th minute witnessed Leo scoring his third goal to become the fourth hat-trick scorer of the tournament, which also ended the first half.
After the lemon break, United 16 though did make changes in the game plan by taking on to offensive attack but they lacked the finishing touch while their best opportunity to score a face-saver came in 83rd minute as Jonathan Koso (10) took a target shot off Menoneikho (15) pass but barely missed the cross bar.
On the other hand, New Market did create several opportunities in the second half too but custodian Sumi denied the goal as he held Menguzelie Rutsa (11) feeble right footer in 49th minute and also thwarted power shot of Kethozapu Meru (3) in 59th minute, while Leo hit the post in 68th and 86th minutes of play.
Longshebemo Tungo of New Market was yellow carded in 61st minute.
Winning today’s match New Market has moved to the third position with 15 points of the league table but their stay will depend on the 9th round play of Khriekesa FC tomorrow.
