Kohima DDMA Conducts mock exercise on earthquake

Dimapur, April 29: A mock exercise on earthquake was conducted by Kohima District Disaster Management Authority in collaboration with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh and State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) at Seikhazou, Kohima on Monday.
The mock exercise carried out evacuation and administration of casualties with first aid by the NDRF and SDRF personnel. The NDRF-Itanagar were equipped with Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR), Flood Rescue Operation, Medical First Responder (MFR) and Chemical Biological Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN).
In the earthquake exercise, two buildings collapsed, which included Seikhazou Government Higher Secondary School and Urban Primary Health Centre, Seikhazou where a total number of 21 casualties were reported. Out of 21 casualties, one was reported to be dead, seven seriously injured who were shifted to Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) and 13 were reported with minor injuries.
At the incident site, a Common Post for Incident and Team Commander was stationed where all the stakeholders were assigned for evacuation exercise. There was also a medical post where NDRF and medical officers were administering the casualties with first aid assistance.
After the incident, a de-briefing was held where the observers of the mock exercise, Deputy Commandant, Pranab Daimari and Chief Medical Officer, Abir Chowdhury from NDRF Itanagar pointed out that overall exercise was conducted promptly and successfully by all the concerned stakeholders. However, they suggested for more effective communication system, local stakeholders as first responder, rescue equipment items, more military/police personnel involvement and setting up of information centre near the staging area for such emergency operation in future. They appreciated the Kohima DDMA and SDRF Team for their good respond time and thanked all the stakeholders for their participation.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima who was also the Responsible Officer DDMA, Anoop Khinchi stated that the exercise was a great learning for all the stakeholders and thanked the 12 BN NDRF Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh for coming this far and enlightened the participants through the exercise. He also pointed out that proper communication plan, training for SDRF and concerned departments and hospital preparedness needs to be taken care and further thanked all the concerned stakeholders for their prompt intervention and participation and making it a success.
ADC Kohima Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa who was also the Incident Commander reported that the incident happened at 10:40 am where all the concerned stakeholders reported promptly to the incident site. She informed that stakeholders like NDRF, SDRF, Home Guards, KVYO, Fire & Emergency Services, Chief Medical Officer, Power, KMC reported along with their personnel, equipments and machineries for rescue operation.
