Kohima, April 23: In commemoration of International Earth Day, Kohima District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) organized a painting competition for school children at LCS Conference hall, Kohima under the theme “Protect our species.”
Giving a presentation on Environmental Laws, Panel Lawyer Nagali Shohe highlighted that the concerted effort for protection of environment was made under the leadership of then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. In 1976, under the 42nd amendment of the Indian Constitution, provisions such as Article 48 (A) for protection and improvement of environment and safeguarding of forest and wildlife were added.
Shohe also noted that Article 51 (A) fundamental duties for all the citizens of India to protect and improve natural environment was added.
She also spoke on the prominence of the Earth day, adding that the first Earth day was observed in the year 1970 started by Gaylord Nelson and Danish Hayes as the first organizers.
Medovituo from Ruzhukhrie Government High School was adjudged winner of the painting competition. Alovito Chophy from Chandmari Higher Secondary School and Thepfuthoutuo John from Ruzhukhrie Government High School bagged second and third prize respectively. Two consolation prizes were also conferred to Avino Koso from John Government Secondary School and Neiketouzo from Dr. N Kire Higher Secondary School.
Three students each from eight schools- Chandmari Higher Secondary School Kohima, Chandmari Government high school, Stella Higher Secondary School, Dr. N Kire GHSS, Ruzukhrie Government Higher Secondary School, John Government Higher Secondary School, Mezhur Government Higher Secondary School, Government High School Sechu Zubza.
The panel judges for the competition were Legal Literacy Clubs (LLC) Project Coordinator Temsu Walling, KDLSA Panel Lawyer Asenla Walling and KDLSA Panel Lawyer Aketoli J Yepthomi.
