Kanye West took his first step towards running for President despite reports he had “dropped out” of the race.
The Jesus Walks rapper, 43, has filed with the Federal Election Commission which is a requirement for anyone running for US President.
According to TMZ, Kanye filled out the first form required by the FEC to run for president – Form 1: Statement of Organization – declaring that the Kanye 2020 committee will serve as the ‘Principal Campaign Committee’ with West as its candidate.
He also declared he will be running as a third party candidate for the BDY party – which stands for the Birthday Party.
But Kanye is yet to file Form 2: Statement of Candidacy – which shows he’s “raised or spent more than $5,000 in campaign activity” and triggers candidacy status under federal campaign finance law.
An early poll suggested the rap star was on track for a humiliating election defeat.
His road to power hit a substantial stumbling block on Tuesday as the first polls since he announced his intention to run for President of the USA showed him gaining barely any support.
Kanye announced on July 4 he is running for presidency, but had not filed out or filed any paperwork at that time.
Taking to Twitter to announce his plan to run, Kanye said: “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future.
“I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.”
It had been reported that Kanye had abandoned his plans less than two weeks after announcing his hopes to become President.
An election strategist told the Intelligencer just hours before the FEC filing dropped: “He’s out.”
Steve Kramer, who was hired by Kanye to focus on getting his name on the ballot in Flordia and South Carolina said: “I’ll let you know what I know once I get all our stuff canceled.
“We had over 180 people out there today. I have nothing good or bad to say about Kanye.”
He continued: “Everyone has their personal decision about why they make decisions. Running for president has to be one of the hardest things for someone to actually contemplate at that level.”
But the FEC filing tells different as it signals Kanye is ready to take things seriously.
