IPM demonstration held at Thongsunyu


Dimapur, May 20: ATMA Tseminyu block under Kohima district conducted a demonstration programme at Thongsunyu village on May 13 on integrated pest management (Fall Army Worm). Assistant Technology Manager (ATM) Chunlikha block, Kebegi Kent was the resource person.
She demonstrated on how to use locally available botanical pesticides for fall armyworm management such as Melia azarirach, marigold, lemon grass, lantana camara, chrysanthemum and pyrethrum by simply grinding the leaves of the plant and soak it overnight which is applied directly to the crops the next morning.
Some other cultural methods such as light traps, yellow sticky traps were also taught to the farmers. The use of plant-derived pesticides in pest management is a cultural practice and could provide a potential arsenal against the pest.
Altogether 9 farmers attended the demo followed by farm inspection.
Banana plantation: ATMA Tseminyu block under Kohima district conducted training on banana plantation at Thongsunyu village on May 13. The programme was chaired by Muaythong, AFA, Department of Agriculture. Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Vibeilie Joseph Keretsu BTM, Tseminyu block.
Resource person Pelebei-ii Kense ATM, Tseminyu block spoke on banana plantation. She highlighted the importance of selecting the right type of suckers and how to differentiate between the sword suckers and the water suckers. She also explained on the management practices such as propping, bunch covering, denavelling, and post-harvest handling for sustainable and economic production.
An interaction session with the farmers was also held. Altogether 12 farmers attended the programme.
