Dimapur, October 16: The 12th Inter District Catch Them Young Tournament 2019 was inaugurated by Advisor, Youth Resources & Sports, Er. Zale Neikha at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on Wednesday.
Er. Zale said that the Catch Them Young Tournament has now become a popular tag in the country as it aim to discover the potential of young sportsperson and nurture them for future prospect. He said the initiative of Youth Resources & Sports department is to provide a platform for young sportspersons and athletes to develop and sharpen their skill to make them champions.
Secretary, Youth Resources & Sports, Alun Hangsing said games and sports has become an important part for one’s upbringing as a lot of concentrations are put not only for physical but for all round development. He added that games and sports have now become an important medium to develop relationship and friendship between villages, district and even countries.
Director, Youth Resources & Sports Akumla Chuba said the Catch Them Young Tournament was started way back in 1974 with the motto “Catch them young and teach them right” with only football and athletics as the only games and sports played but today the department has taken the initiative to include wrestling, boxing badminton and taekwondo in the coming years and said the department will tap the best talents of the sportspersons from all the districts and give them the opportunity for better training.
She also thanked the two representatives from the Bhaichung Bhutia School Delhi, Nikhil and Sumit who will be scouting best football players to form a team from the programme to represent the state and train them in their academy in New Delhi.
A total of 290 participants which includes 215 boys and 75 girls from eleven teams representing all the districts of the state are partaking in the 3-day tournament.
