How far can the PCCNPI go?

Nagaland News

KOHIMA, JULY 11: The recently coined Parliamentary Core Committee on Naga political issue is seemingly another political gimmick to pull wool over somebody’s eyes.

This new Committee was a scheme of People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) Government to bring back opposition Naga People’s Front (NPF) to a common platform, as desired by the Central Government. Not only the State Government but even Home Minister, Amit Shah had also asked the NPF to rejoin the Joint Legislators’ Forum (JLF), but the Cock leadership was hesitant to rejoin the JLF, which was headed by the Assembly Speaker, on the ground that Speaker was remote-controlled by the Chief Minister.
Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition, TR Zeliang had demanded that JLF be headed by the Chief Minister. Now the Core Committee will be headed by Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio as Convener, Deputy CM, Y Patton and Leader of Opposition, Zeliang as co-Conveners. Except change of leadership, it is only old wine in new bottle, as this Committee will continue to inherit role played by JLF as “facilitator”.
A senior NPF leader said the Parliamentary Core Committee is “old wine in new bottle” except for the change of leadership.
“Under JLF we departed and started working separately, we have come back together again under parliamentary committee where CM of NDPP is the Convener, co-Convener is Deputy CM from BJP and TR Zeliang, LoP as another co-Convener to give a concerted effort for solution”, another NPF leader said.
But even as the parliamentary Core Committee has been formed, the NPF said it will not disband the Political Affairs Mission (PAM). The decision not to disband PAM is also attempt to score a political point.
Earlier alongside JLF, the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) Government under Rio had Political Affairs Committee (PAC) headed by few senior political leaders.
The JLF, which was vocal on Naga integration and honourable and acceptable solution and to pave way for any alternative arrangement, had changed political tone in the last couple of years after the formation of PDA Government, where BJP is a key partner. Then JLF and now Parliamentary Core Committee’s main effort is apparently to flock Naga groups together for one solution. But the problem is that Naga groups are seeking different solutions.

It remains to be seen how this Core Committee would facilitate and cement the differences between Naga armed groups, because it is understandable that Nagaland Government knows where the Naga peace process is heading. Both Chief Minister Rio and former CM, Zeliang have had enough meetings with Central leaders, and by now they should known the pulse of the Union Government.
