Guwahati grenade blast: Police bust ‘sleeper cell’, arrest 2


GUWAHATI, May 16: Assam Police on Thursday morning busted a “sleeper cell” of banned Ulfa (I) in the heart of Guwahati and arrested a “self-proclaimed” member of pro-talk Ulfa group and a popular Assamese TV serial actress, poet and mother of two, in connection with the grenade blast in the city on Wednesday that had left nine civilians and two SSB jawans injured.
Police also stumbled upon a grenade making unit at the rented house in Panjabari area of the city near Army’s Narengi cantonment from where the duo were arrested. Acting on a tip-off, the special investigating team of police found 70 kg of gun powder like substance and an iron die for making a grenade, a 9MM pistol, 35 rounds of live bullets, flag of ULFA-I and a scooty, which is suspected to have been used on Wednesday blast besides some objectionable documents.
Jahnabi Saikia and Pranamoy Rajguru have confessed to the crime. “We have now the all the details of how the grenade blast was carried out. Pranamoy Rajguru, who had joined Ulfa in 1986, set up this sleeper cell here and he was managing the logistics for the outfit. Jahnabi Saikia was his associate and helping in transportation of the cadres.”
Both the arrested persons are from Sivasagar are well known locally. Pro-talk Ulfa leader Anup Chetia told TOI, “Pranamoy Rajguru is not a trained Ulfa cadre and may be he was working for Ulfa at the local level in Sivasagar but he is not a listed member of the pro-talk Ulfa.”
After he was arrested at the rented house here, Rajguru told the waiting media, “Our fight will continue till our demands are fulfilled. The government should know that these activities will continue. Long live, our struggle. (TNN)
