KOHIMA, JUNE 17: Unknown gunmen today vandalized the office of All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) Headquarters, Kohima, by putting its general secretary at gunpoint for not fulfilling the demand of annual tax.
Sources said that the incident happened at around 6 p.m. Saturday evening, when ANTA Hq Kohima general secretary Meyieho Hibo was in the office all alone. ANTA office is next to Cooperative Bank in the main town.
Narrating the incident, Hibo said that while he was about to close the office, he saw two persons walking up to their office on the office CCTV. One of them entered the office and directly demanded the annual tax without mentioning which faction they are from, he said.
However, Hibo said he informed the person that since ANTA has decided to stand with ‘one government, one tax’, the demand would not be complied with.
Thereafter, the person took out a pistol and pointing it on Hibo pushed his face to the wall while more people came in and damaged the ANTA office furniture, computer set and other important documents.
Hibo said that after damaging the office, they latched him in from outside and left. He came out from the verandah door and sought nearby peoples’ help to open it.
Traumatized by the incident, Hibo, still shivering, said he was unable to recall the face of the person who first came inside his room.
An FIR has been lodged at North Police Station and investigation is on to nab the culprits, sources said.
Taking the stand of ‘one government, one tax’, ANTA has reportedly stopped paying tax to any of the factions since last year, he said.
ANTA Hq, Kohima, president Dziesevituo Solo, strongly condemning the incident said that such an unwarranted act of the miscreants is unacceptable.
“Putting our executive member at gunpoint and vandalizing the office is a very serious issue”, he said while asserting that the Association will not remain silent but will decide on the further course of action only after an executive meeting on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, sources said that three suspected persons reportedly extorting money from shops on Naga Hospital road were nabbed by police after being informed by ANTA Action Committee members.
However, the involvement of the three miscreants in threatening Hibo and vandalizing ANTA office was not ascertained till the time of filing this.
