Govt issues alert on lumpy skin disease in cattle

Dimapur, August 27: In view of the report on emergence of Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle in Assam, the State Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services has directed all district officers to issue red alert instruction to all check gates within their jurisdiction for control of diseased/suspected animal movement.
The DoAH&VS also directed all CVOs to be on high alert by carrying out strict surveillance/monitoring on the occurrence of the disease in the State through the veterinary institutes in their respective districts. The CVOs of Peren, Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng and Mon have also requested to send the report of disease outbreak, if any, to the directorate immediately.
The Lumpy Skin Disease is caused by Poxviridae family virus characterized by fever, multiple nodules on the skin and enlarged superficial lymph nodes with mortality ranging from 1-3%. However, it causes huge economic losses in the form of drop in milk production, reduced skin quality and restriction of trade/movement.
