Dimapur, March 20: The inaugural programme for 1st batch of training on Capacity Building in IT and Digital Services (including digital payments and GST) for State Government officials was held at NIELIT Kohima auditorium today, with IGP, Sandeep M. Tamgadge, IPS, as the chief guest.
Comparing information technology ten years back with the present day, Sandeep said, “IT has changed so drastically in the last ten years, now I don’t actually need to have any physical memory since my smart phone is good enough to practically remember everything.” He mentioned the importance of IT through examples of recharging Tata Sky, booking for restaurants etc.
Tamgadge said 20 years back there was apprehension that we will loss half of the Government jobs with the entry of IT, which has now been proved otherwise. Y2K phenomena was the biggest hoax in IT world since it has crashed as predicted. We need to know how to use IT tools for betterment of delivery of Services, he asserted.
Explaining the purpose of the training, Tamgadge stated that public, government and professional life are all touched by IT. All the Government activities are governed in some manner by some sort of IT, slowly IT has taken our lives in control. He said five years down the line we are going to have a system of just going through the biometrics and the doctors will be able to tell you what kind of problems you have, same thing with e-Governance everything is going to be done through online application.
Last year, in order to make digital payment easier, the GoI has introduced BHIM app, it can link all your bank accounts and can make payment just through fingerprints and without cards or cash. It is our choice to remain stagnant or to move ahead and make our lives easier, he added.
Director NIELIT Khima, Er. Lanuwabang in his keynote address highlighted the activities and the projects undertaken by NIELIT since its inception in October 2003. In order to effectively offer services to the public, the first step is to empower the employees, “unless you know how to use IT, how can you give services to the citizens?” he questioned.
Tamgadge also mentioned that the Ministry of DoNER has entrusted NIELIT to train 50,000 government employees across the eight North-Eastern states within a span of three years. Training includes the basics of office work, day to day operation of digital payment, GST etc. The training will be seven hours per day for fourteen days. We want everything to be transparent and not just a namesake training so we are taking biometric attendance and certificate will be generated online at the end of the training, the Director added.
