KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 6: Governor RN Ravi today released a Special Cover on the “Naga Tree Tomato”, a Geographical Indication tagged product of Nagaland, at Raj Bhavan.
The Special Cover will be put on display at the National Philatelic Museum, New Delhi, and will be sold all over India and displayed worldwide.
Speaking at the Special Cover releasing programme Ravi thanked the Postal Department in creating wider visibility of the Naga Tree Tomato. He said even the Government of Nagaland is not aware of its diversity and products. He said the State has limited visibility and that the role of the State Government is important in giving adequate visibility to the unique products in order to create more awareness to outsiders.
Ravi said Nagaland’s craft and products can still go out in very limited numbers and could attract immediate attention of people. He urged the State Government to identify such products either in agriculture, Horticulture, or arts and crafts, which are special and claim GI tagging to make then visibility, as the State has so many varieties of products.
The Governor also urged the State Government to take up the initiatives and identify more available products with the support of the administration and civil society organizations.
Chief Post-Master General Northeast Circle Amitabh Kharkwal said that Special Cover was released to signify a significant event and highlight an important product by the Department. He said that Geographical Indication tag is important as it not only prevents the unauthorized use of a Registered Gl product by a third party but it also provides legal protection to the Geographical Indication items, which in turn will boost its sales and exports.
He said the Department of Posts, North East Circle, has taken the initiative to release Special Covers on all the 19 GI products of the Northeast, which includes the Naga Tree Tomato and 2 Special Covers on Gl tagged items from Nagaland namely “Naga Mircha” and “Chakhesang Shawl” that have been recently released on August 15 and 28, 2021 respectively.
