Governor calls for mechanism to check spread of fake news

Dimapur, November 16: Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya on Friday said there should be a mechanism to check spread of fake news, as it can be a threat to democracy.
“Nowadays social media is used as a powerful tool to disseminate news because of its ability to reach huge number of people in any parts of the globe. There should be a mechanism to check spread of fake news which can be a threat to democracy,” he said.
The Governor stated that and independent, fair and bold media is essential for strengthening democracy.
Greeting the press fraternity in Nagaland on the occasion of National Press Day today, the Governor said among the four pillars of democracy, media has greater potential and power to create better world and better future.
The Governor said the media, both print and electronic, plays a major role in shaping our society and has become a bridge between the Government and the citizens. “Be it television, newspapers, website or radio, the consistent coverage by media on each and every issue of the society creates bigger impacts, making it one of the most important professions of these days,” he said.
The Governor also opined that there should be a mechanism for maintaining the standard of the newspaper reporting and thereby ensuring that all the guidelines are adhered to by reporters. “There should be a constant review of the quality of reporting and improvement in the guidelines. This may be followed by the media organizations all over the country to continuously improve the quality and maintain the consistency of news reporting.”
