Government very serious about developing sports

Nagaland News

Kohima, May 20: Director of YRS Kethosituo Sekhose today affirmed that Nagaland Government is very serious about developing sports at the grassroots level and providing infrastructure throughout the state.
Addressing a press conference in the directorate conference hall, he said the YRS department is taking seriously the gap in sports infrastructure in the district for which under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the government has decided to provide a multi-disciplinary indoor sports stadium in all the district headquarters.
“We are hopeful that by March 2025 we should be able to see the infrastructure,” Sekhose said.
He also informed that the state government is rigorously pursuing with the Central Government to provide infrastructure under the Khelo India programme under which already six such projects including three multi-purpose indoor stadiums have been completed beside ongoing football ground and multi-purpose indoor stadiums in interior areas.
He said that the department has carried out a gap analysis of sports infrastructure and talent in the districts so as to focus on the particular event in the district, which has been proposed to the government and will be taken up accordingly.
Pre-Sunbroto Cup selection: In this regard, he said unlike earlier years where Nagaland team for Subroto Cup used to be selected at the last moment from schools but this year the department for the first time will be holding pre-Subroto selection from the district level for boys U-14 and girls U-17.
The state level pre-Subroto tournament will be held in Kohima jointly with Nagaland Football Association (NFA) from June 5 to 12 at Indira Gandhi stadium for selection of the state team for boys and girls, he said.
This would also ensure that the players do not provide false age documents and also ensure fair and transparent selection while each child would get the opportunity to be in the state team, he said.
On many districts lacking sporting infrastructure, he said the department is taking the gap in sports infrastructure seriously and under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the government has decided to provide a multi-disciplinary indoor sports stadium in all the district headquarters.
He hoped that the stadiums would be completed by March 2025.
