Former Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Acharya passes away

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 10: Senior BJP leader and former Governor of Nagaland, Padmanabha Acharya passed away in Mumbai on Friday. Acharya (92), who hailed from Udupi in Karnataka, breathed his last at his house in Mumbai.
Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya was a senior leader, having served the Rashriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and BJP.
Acharya’s appointment as the Governor of Nagaland in 2014 marked a significant milestone, making him the second person from coastal Karnataka to hold this prestigious position – the first being Margaret Alva. Notably, he was the first individual from the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community to be appointed to the Governor’s post.
Acharya was a student belonging to the first batch of MGM College (1948-50). He had served as the head of RSS Vidyaranya unit in Kadabettu in the town. Acharya, who was an active worker of the RSS, had been kept behind bars for over 6 months by the Government in 1948, after RSS was banned.
He had served as national secretary of the BJP when Narendra Modi was functioning as the national general secretary of the party, between 1995 and 2001. During that period, Modi was in charge of 5 North Indian Sates, while Padmanabha Acharya was entrusted with the Northeastern States.
Acharya had served as Governor of Nagaland, Tripura, Assam and also handled the responsibilities as Governor of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
Governor, CM condole
Nagaland Governor La Ganeesan has expressed grief over the demise of former Governor PB Acharya.
“Shri Acharya’s remarkable qualities as a genuinely warm, hospitable, generous and down to earth person will always be remembered”, he said in a condolence message.
The Governor expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that his soul rest in eternal peace.
Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio has expressed shock and grief at the demise of PB Acharya, former Governor of Nagaland today at his residence at Mumbai.
In a condolence message, Rio stated that Acharya’s demise is a great loss to the nation, especially to people of Nagaland, with who he had endeared himself as one of the most loved Governors of Nagaland.
Stating that his absence would be deeply felt by those who worked with him and loved him, Rio said though he is no longer in our midst, his good deeds would always shine and his memory would always be inscribed in our hearts.
On behalf of the Government of Nagaland and on behalf of his family, Rio extended deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed that they find comfort and strength in the Almighty as they come to terms with this loss.

Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton has condoled the death of PB Acharya, veteran politician and former Governor of Nagaland on November 10 at Mumbai.
Patton said that late Acharya was a straightforward and compassionate gentleman, whose love for Northeast India is unparalleled. He would always propagate emotional and cultural integration of the region.
His demise is a big loss for the region and the nation, he said and on behalf of the state BJP legislators, the Dy.CM extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed to rest in peace.
Former Speaker, Thenucho has expressed grief at the demise of PB Acharya, former Governor of Nagaland, and conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Stating that in his passing away, Nagas have lost a good administrator and a dedicated social worker, Thenucho prayed that the departed soul rest in peace.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has expressed shock and grief at the demise of PB Acahrya, former Governor of Nagaland, at Mumbai.
In a condolence message, NDPP president, Chingwang Konyak stated that late Acharya was known for his integrity and dedication in his service to the people and whose benevolence and generosity was second to none.
Stating that at his passing, the people of the Northeast in general and Nagaland in particular have not only lost a friend, but a fatherly figure who devoted his life in the upliftment and betterment of society, the NDPP mourned the passing of PB Acharya as he always had a very special place in the hearts of all party men and women as he was the Governor who swore in the first ever NDPP-led Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDA)
Chingwang and his wife joined the rank and file of the NDPP in conveying deepest and heartfelt condolences and prayers to Kavita Acharya and the members of the bereaved family.
