Dimapur, January 24: Former Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Mülhüpra Vero (M. Vero) passed away on Friday morning around 7 am at his private residence in Dimapur. He was 88 and is survived by his wife and two children.
The send off funeral service will be on January 25 at 9 am at Agri Expo, 4th Mile after which his body will be taken to his native village Runguzu under Phek district for burial.
Recipient of Padmashree Award, Vero was the first Rajya Sabha, MP who represented Nagaland for two consecutive terms from 1964-1974. He was elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) from 19-Phek assembly constituency in 1974. Later in 1989 he was re-elected to the NLA from 18 Chozuba assembly constituency and became a cabinet minister.
He was also the first president of the Naga Hoho from 1998-2004. In 2006 he was accorded the prestigious Padmashree Award by the President of India.
During 1995 to 2004, he undertook extensive tours within the country and abroad appealing the leaders of National Political Groups to reconcile through the spirit of forgive and forget.
Guv, CM condoles
Nagaland Governor, RN Ravi has expressed shock at the demise of Padma Shri M Vero, saying in his death the State has lost a dedicated and sincere public leader.
The Governor conveyed deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
CM: Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also expressed shock and grief at the demise of M Vero, who he described as a political giant and popular political leader.
Rio said late M Vero’s manifold services for the Naga people can never be forgotten and the vacuum created by his demise will be difficult to fill. He on behalf of the Government of Nagaland expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
