Kohima, March 26: Former Home Minister Dr. T M Lotha passed away surrounded by his loved one, last night at around 11.30, from Wokha Civil Hospital after a brief illness. He was 68. He is survived by his wife, five sons, and one daughter. He hailed from the Longsha Village.
With the death of former Home Minister, Dr. T M Lotha, this year alone the State has lost 6 former Legislators and two sitting MLAs.
This year the State has lost two sitting MLAs, former Speaker, Vikho-o Yhoshu and Torechu.
Before entering into politics, Dr T M Lotha was an Assistant Surgeon since 1977. After serving Government for a brief period, he joined politics and contested Sixth General Election in 1987 as Naga National Democratic Party (NNDP) candidate from 38 Wokha Assembly Constituency but lost.
Dr. Lotha again contested from the same constituency on Nagaland People’s Council (NPC) in 1989 and was elected and appointed as Minister for Housing and Fire Services. He again contested in 2003 from BJP ticket and from the same constituency and became Minister for Home and Medical Department.
In 2008 he lost but he won again in 2013 on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket.
Dr. Lotha also served as the President of Naga Students’ Union, Assam Medical College 1974; Secretary, Naga Students’ Union Dibrugarh 1975; President, Student Christian Movement, Assam Medical College 1975; Peace Mission Member, Naga Hoho 1996; Executive Member, Lotha Hoho 1994-2003; Chairman, Political Affairs Committee 2008-2012.
