Fierce open badminton tournament

Kohima, October 12: The Fierce Open Badminton Tournament, organised by Kohima Town Christian Revival Church Youth Fellowship (KTCRCYF), will be held on October 14&15 at Grand Vista Arena, below High Court Junction, Meriema, Kohima.
Addressing a press conference at Hotel Crescent International here this evening, convenor of organising committee of the tournament, Zhaviu Pienyü said so far more than 60 players from different parts of the State have confirmed participation, while more are expected to register by Thursday.
The tourney, he said, is being held to encourage the players and the youth from different churches to get involved in physical activities so as to stay active and fit to fulfil their calling.
He expressed optimism that the event would bring more unity among the people as they will come together from different parts of the state.
He also hoped that the 2-day tournament will strengthen the bonding among the CRCYF.
Informing that a total cash prize of Rs 2.39 lakh has been earmarked for the different categories of winners, he said that the highest prize money of open category of men’s doubles with Rs 50,000 for champion and Rs 25,000 for runner-up will be in men’s double event.
Other categories and awards include: Open category (mixed double): Champion – Rs 30,000 & runner-up – Rs 15,000; 40+ category (men’s doubles): Champion – Rs 30,000 & runner-up – Rs 15,000; amateur category (men’s doubles): Champion – Rs 30,000 & runner-up – Rs 15,000; amateur category (men’s single): Champion – Rs 15,000 & runner-up – Rs 8,000; and Beginners category (men’s doubles): Champion – Rs 4,000 & runner-up – Rs 2,000.
The tournament is being conducted in collaboration with Nagaland Badminton Association (NBA), who will bring out the fixtures and be the umpires for the games.
The stadium has two courts with Badminton World Federation (BFW) certified carpets, he said.
