Farooq Abdullah backs Jinnah, blames Nehru, Patel for partition

New Delhi, March 4: In a controversial statement, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has said that Muhammad Ali Jinnah never wanted to “divide” India.
The National Conference (NC) chief instead blamed former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and Maulana Azad for the partition.
“Jinnah was not going to divide the country… there was a commission and it was decided that India won’t be divided. There will be a special representation for minorities– Sikhs and Muslims but there would be no partition,” said Abdullah on Saturday.
However, it was Indian leaders’ refusal to accept this status for Muslims and Sikh that led to Jinnah’s demand for Pakistan, Abdullah said.
“Jinnah agreed but Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad and Sardar Patel did not agree. When this did not happen it was then that Jinnah demanded for Pakistan or else there would have been no separation,” he said.
“There would have been no Bangladesh, no Pakistan; there would have been one India,” he added.
Farooq Abdullah decries communalisation of politics ahead of 2019 LS elections
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah today expressed grave concern over communalisation of politics” ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and cautioned the BJP to desist from “dividing the nation into religious lines”.
A polarised India is detrimental to its growth, progress, unity and peace, he said during a function at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here.
The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir also decried the misuse of religion for political and electoral gains.
Elaborating on the attempts by divisive forces in the state with an eye on ensuing elections, Abdullah said Jammu and Kashmir have to flourish and progress as a single entity. On the rape and murder of a minor girl in the state’s Kathua district recently, the NC chief said a dangerous trend was being set wherein the culprits were using religion as a shield to escape law of the land.
