Farmers trained on nutritional importance of millets

Dimapur, December 5: With the objective to create awareness for the ensuing International Year of Millets 2023, District Management Unit FOCUS-IFAD Project, Kohima District organised training for lead farmers on “Nutritional importance of Millets” on December 3. The training was undertaken in collaboration with the ICAR – Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) project based at School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) Medziphema. Dr. Pankaj Shah, Associate Professor, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding was the resource person.
Dr. Shah highlighted about the importance of millets in our current day and age. He said that our current lifestyle is missing out on the various benefits of having millets in our diet. He appraised the farmers on the nutritional importance of Millets and also on different types of millets cultivated, namely Major Millets, Minor Millets and Pseudo Millets. Among various types of Millets, special emphasis was on Foxtail Millets and Sorghum.
Keynote address was given by the Deputy Agriculture Officer Kekhrieletuo Yhome, who encouraged the farmers to use the training as a tool to go forward and to share among their fellow farmers about the benefits of millets, and also put emphasis on major cultivation millets for the nutritional as well as food safety for upcoming generations.
