Ensure all polling stations are accessible to PwDs: Diethono to SEC

Nagaland News

DIMAPUR, JUNE 21: The State Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro has urged the State Election Commissioner, Nagaland to ensure that all polling stations are accessible to persons with disabilities and all materials related to the electoral process are easily understandable by and accessible to PwDs.
In a letter to the SEC, the Court of the Commissioner (Disabilities), Kohima cited Section 8 of the Nagaland Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules 2019 which states: “The Election Department shall ensure that the election process is made accessible to People with Disabilities. It will make all necessary measures on enrolment, accessibility of polling stations and all materials related to the electoral process”.
As per the provisions, reasonable accommodations are required to be made to ensure that eligible voters with disabilities are able to fully participate in the electoral process, the letter said.
Stating that information received till date on preparations made for the upcoming ULB elections in the State makes no mention of facilities being provided for electors with disabilities, the letter said it is imperative that the provisions are administered and implemented by the SEC so that PwDs are not left out from exercising their adult franchise.
“Action Taken Report is to be submitted to the Court on or before 24the June”, the letter added.
