ENPO areas have enormous tourism potentials: Nagaland CM


DIMAPUR, JUNE 15: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday said that the ENPO areas of Nagaland are have enormous potentials for tourism as the region is rich in biodiversity and urged the people to utilize the potentials by working together.
Inaugurating the DUDA Guest House at Sovima today, the Chief Minister categorically mentioned that the people of ENPO areas are no longer ‘backward’ today as it was thought when the Department was created way back in 2003.
He said during the creation of DUDA, ENPO was backward but now the backwardness is different.
“Don’t have the reservation of backwardness. You are good now. You come out (successfully) in competitive exams…doing better in HSLC, HSSLC, exams…you are doing better than advanced tribes”, he said.
Explaining how the Department of Under Developed Areas was envisaged some 19 years back, Rio stated that funds are given to MLAs, but for iconic projects, the Government has a policy to have one project every year.
He said DUDA has its own version of development. However, he said that agri products needs to be market for which market links have been established and are doing well.
He also stressed on home furnishing through digital prints adding Naga motifs designs are unique which have to be patented.
The Chief Minister also talked about various avenues where people can generate income by investing in projects. He said the Government provides corpus funds for projects, besides loans can be availed from agencies like NABARD at low interests. However, he said that people should bring viable projects so that banks can accept their proposals.
Taking about micro farmers and entrepreneurs, Rio said that the Government is ready to provide loans. He said interviews would be conducted and selection will be done in every district. Interest-free loans would be given, provided they bring a guarantor from village authority, he added.
Calling upon DUDA to be a game changer, Rio lauded the Department for being able to implement all the projects with responsibility.
He said the DUDA Guest House at Sovima will come as a relief for many in the commercial hub of Nagaland. Since the inception of the Department in 2003, ENPO has changed a lot and has made tangible achievements.
He also appealed to the Department to continue training people to develop skills and urged them to keep a separate budget for it. He assured them that the State Government will provide every possible assistance for upliftment of ENPO areas and to bring the people of those districts at par with the rest of the State.
He appealed to the elected members to be more responsible and collectively give their service. He also appealed to each individual to extend continuous support to DUDA.
Expressing hope that the building will cater to the needs of the people of Eastern Nagaland, he said the success would motivate officers to work with more commitment and take development activities forward.
Chairman Village Council, Sovima, Sebastian Zumvu, in his brief address, said with the inauguration of DUDA Guest House, Sovima Village has become home of all tribes of Nagaland. He said that Sovima Village does not have any negative tribalistic feelings. He welcomed the Eastern Naga brethren and urged them to make sure they feel at home.
