Dimapur, February 17: The Department of History, Eastern Christian College Padumpukhuri, conducted a one-day lecture on the topic ‘Political History of the Nagas’ on February 17.
A press release informed that the lecture was part of the syllabus of BA 6th semester history honours (603). The objective of the programme was to impart knowledge of the political history of the Nagas to the students, it stated.
Padma Bhushan Dr. SC Jamir, former Chief Minister of Nagaland and former Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha, was the main theme speaker.
He spoke on the topic: A panoramic view of Naga political movement vis à vis contemporary political realities. “He shared his deep concern about the kind of history which the present generation would beget as an enduring and enlightened legacy for the future generation of the Nagas.
“Leaders of all hues are thoroughly obsessed with the past, and maybe either out of ignorance or lack of interest they hardly talk about the present and the future of the people. If we continue to harp on the already discarded and outdated tune, we shall be left out from the contemporary world. Thus, keeping in view of this imperative, he wanted us to examine in depth the real malady that is affecting and ruining the health of Naga polity”, it stated.
Jamir also highlighted the early evolution of Naga political movement: pre-eminence of the Naga National Council (NNC), emergence of the Naga People’s Convention, results of the first Naga People’s Convention 1957 and conundrum of political agreement with underground groups.
He ended the session by answering questions put forward by the audience.
