DRI seizes 6.3 kgs of gold worth Rs 1.93 cr at Siliguri

Dimapur, August 10: Close on the heels of a big haul of 23 kgs of smuggled gold coming from Siliguri to Kolkata by buses from 5 persons last weekend and 8.5 kgs of gold seized at Aizwal besides another 10.5 kgs of gold haul in the thickly populated Bura Bazaar in Kolkata, officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) searched one room at a hotel located at Pradhan Nagar area of Siliguri on August 9 and seized around 6.3 kg of foreign origin gold bars amounting to Rs 1.93 crores from the possession of two youth from Mizoram.
In the 23 kgs case four persons from Mizoram were placed under arrest, while one juvenile was handed over to Mizoram House in Kolkata. Likewise, in the Aizawl case also, a Mizo origin person was arrested.
The two persons in the latest case have been identified as Ngindosianmang (29) and Kapliansanga (20), both residents of Mizoram. 38 pieces of gold biscuits weighing 6.3 kgs were recovered from their possession. The gold was concealed in “waist pads” of their trousers.
DRI said the accused have admitted that the gold was smuggled into India through Indo-Myanmar border at Champhai, Mizoram and that they were carrying the same for delivery at Kolkata. They were to travel by bus from Siliguri to Kolkata. The persons have been arrested by the DRI.
With these seizures, in the current financial year, starting from 01/04/2018 till date, in the region spread over West Bengal and the North-Eastern states, the DRI has already seized over 220 kg of gold and gold jewellery smuggled from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and even China.
