Dimapur see spike in crime as curbs ease

Dimapur, March 16: As life returns to normal with the lifting of most restrictions imposed since March last year following improvement in the COVID-19 situation, the crime rate in Dimapur is also seeing an unusual spike.

As per the pre-quarterly report of Dimapur police, in the first 75 days of 2021 (from January 1 to March 16), police here registered 138 cases under various IPCs and special laws and arrested 109 persons in this connection. A total cash of Rs 35,08,015 was also seized during the period.
Of the 138 cases registered, 61 were theft cases (and 12 arrests), followed by extortion cases at 13 with arrest of 19 extortionists. There were also 2 murder cases during the period with so suspect yet to be arrested.
According to the report, seizures and arrests in the 13 extortion cases were made by District Police and the Assam Rifles. It informed that a total of Rs 31,10,515 were seized from the extortionists and forwarded to the District Court.
Out of the 138 cases registered, 30 cases were under special laws. The most cases registered were 13 under Arms Act with the arrest of 14 persons, followed by 7 cases under NLTP Act and 5 cases under NDPS Act. Three cases were also registered under POCSO Act and 3 persons were arrested in connection with the cases.
Seizure of arms/ammunitions/explosives and cash during the period include Arms – 16, Ammunitions – 510 rounds, Grenade – 1 and Rs 2,97,500.

Seizure of narcotic drugs and contraband goods are Quanyinwang – 990 grams, Super plus capsule – 97610, Nitrosum tablet – 400, Cash – Rs 1,00,000; Ganja – 211 kgs, Codine Syrup – 75 bottles, Drug orange powder sunflower – 20 grams, Spasmo proxyvon capsules – 125 and IMFL – 3507 bottles.
