Dimapur, March 16: Lieutenant General Shokin Chauhan, Director General Assam Rifles is on a two-day visit to Nagaland from today.
The Director General called upon Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya, who complemented the DG Assam Rifles for the stupendous work done by the Assam Rifles during his tenure; especially during the recently concluded state assembly elections in the state of Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya.
During his visit to HQ IGAR (N), DG Assam Rifles addressed all ranks and appreciated their hard work, dedication and professionalism.
He further exhorted them to continue the good work and live up to the motto “Friends of the North East People’.”
On the occasion the DGAR also inaugurated a Cardamom Processing Plant”, project worth Rs 40 lacs at Mon which has been constructed and dedicated to the local populace by the Assam Rifles. This project is the result of Director General’s ideology of creating islands of excellence in remote areas to address the dependency of local populace on production of their cash crop & lack of facility for drying and processing of the same. Since Mon district is the largest producer of cardamom in Nagaland, inception of this plant will give boost to the farming & trading of cardamom in the Eastern Nagaland.
This processing plant is not only going to benefit 133 villages of Mon district but people from villages of neighbouring districts of Longleng and Tuensang also can bring their product for dry processing and packaging. The plant has the capacity to process 2000 kgs of cardamom in a cycle of 20 hours. This process would not only prevent wastage which is inherent to the traditional processing but also give an opportunity to the farmers to cut down on the middle men thus getting proper value for their product and also will generate employment.
The processing plant would hence be run through a cooperative society formed by Mon village council on no profit basis which would be available to any desirous person irrespective of tribe, Clan, social, ethnic and geographical background at the cost specified by the society so as to generate funds for its operations and maintenance.
The Director General Assam Rifles conveyed his best wishes to the people of Nagaland for a bright, amiable and prosperous future and appealed them to closely associate and trust Assam Rifles as true friends of the Northeast people.
