COVID-19: NNF asks Govt to improve service delivery mechanism

Dimapur, April 22: The Nagaland NGOs Forum (NNF) has appealed to the Government of Nagaland to improve the service delivery mechanism in the State to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an appeal letter to Nagaland Chief Secretary, the NNF, which is a conglomeration of all the Nagaland State Government registered societies, stated that for many, COVID-19 is a survival issue and that “food is more important that fear of the virus.” It wanted that essential commodities distribution effective mechanism should be prioritized as most important.
The NNF said the Government need standard mechanism to assess relief matters, a relief monitoring committee comprising of village/colony leaders, youth leaders and women leaders in each area. Needy beneficiaries list and distribution list must be maintained transparently, it said.
It also asserted the need to strictly enforce basic safety protocols of mask and social distancing, which it observed is still not adhered to even by leaders who are supposed to educate and enforce in their community.
“Consistent support mechanism needs to be explored and put in place. Manipulations and corruptions at grassroots must be prevented. Local resource pooling at respective areas, colony/village etc must be explored to take care of their locality members in need besides Govt or outside relief that may come periodically,” it suggested.
The forum also asserted the need to encourage Churches and Church leaders to play key role in strengthening hands of the Government in maintaining calm and meeting needs of local community.
The NNF was also against the system of utilizing hotels as quarantine but rather invest its resources at respective Government hospitals or at any public utility for future benefits.
It also suggested evacuating all the stranded travelers, students, guest labourers to their respective home, village, town, and states.
The NNF further asked the Government to acknowledge the services of the forum in assisting the Government and include NNF as an apex body in any Government, CSO and NGO joint coordination bodies at State or district level to help in bridging the gap between the Government and masses pn community based mechanism.
