Dimapur, December 6: The Wokha District administration organized signature campaign in support of “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP) 2018 on December 3 from police point junction Wokha, which will continue till December 5 at Wokha police point junction and NST junction.
ADC Wokha, Mhathung Tsanglao said BBBP programme was launched in Wokha district in the month of October 2018, and since then series of programmes and activities is being undertaken across the town and in blocks and villages to spread awareness about the importance of safeguarding and educating girl child.
Stating that “we should not consider having a girl child as a burden but should consider it as an asset and give equal opportunity without any gender bias”, he said girls can become responsible and productive members of the society if proper care and education is given.
He reminded that the Government has a programme of pre-conception and pre-natal detrimental test Act of 1994 to identify pre-detrimental gender of child and warned that illegal operation of girl child after detection is an offence under the law.
Executive Secretary, Lotha Baptist Church Association, Rev Nyanchumo Lotha launched the signature campaign.
EAC, Wokha Tumben P. Tsanglao introduced the local champions during the function. The signature campaign will be led by local champions where banners have been erected at the scheduled locations.
Some of the local champions include Mhonbeni L.Ezung, recipient of National Bravery Award in 2015 at the age of 8 for rescuing her drowning grandmother from a river near Chudi village under Wokha district; Yibponi T.Ezung, the State subject topper in Social Science securing a record 100% in the HSLC exam 2018 from Libemo Memorial School, Wokha; Erenbeni P.Lotha and Nsungbeni L.Tungoe who have a long list of achievements to their names and their partnership in badminton including two times bronze medallist in North-East Tournament 2015 & 2018, three times Nagaland Inter District junior Women Champions 2016, 2017 & 2018 and bronze medallist at the Nagaland Olympics in senior women category 2017.
