Directors of Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers 4 – the brothers Joe & Anthony Russo – addressed Tony Stark’s dream at the beginning of the film, in which he saw a future version of himself having become a parent with Pepper Potts. The Russos were answering fans’ questions on Twitter, in celebration of the film’s home video release.
When a fan asked them if Tony’s dream suggested the existence of an alternate timeline, they replied, “It was a dream, but dreams are mysterious.” Both the possibility of Tony and Pepper becoming parents in the future and the existence of an alternate timeline have been corroborated by members of the Marvel family.
The scene in question happens early in the film, as Tony and Pepper are jogging in New York, and Pepper urges him to hang up his Iron Man suit and settle down. Tony of course chooses to fight Thanos when Doctor Strange bursts his bubble and summons him.
In May, Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper in the Marvel films, revealed a major spoiler soon after Infinity War’s release. Speaking about the future of her relationship with Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark to the official Infinity War magazine, Paltrow said, “Pepper and Tony have had a real long journey together. She obviously starts as his dutiful assistant, and then the relationship evolves, and now this decade later they’re married, and they have a child. Their relationship has evolved in all of the ways that great romances evolve.”
Paltrow’s confirmation could have significant impact on what we can expect from Avengers 4. For one, it all but confirms the rumour that Avengers 4 will take place after a time jump, with an already prone-to-PTSD Tony Stark being forced to deal with the events of the previous film.
Set pictures from Avengers 4 have also revealed that the heroes will revisit the Battle of New York from the first Avengers movie, possibly with the help of the Time Stone.
Ant-Man and the Wasp star Evangeline Lilly in a recent interview compared the plot of Avengers 4 to the fourth season of Lost, the popular television series that she starred in. Season 4 of Lost was when the plot branched out and introduced the concepts of parallel timelines, flashbacks and flashforwards.
“You want me to tell you about the flash-forwards and flashbacks and flash-sideways?” Lilly said, according to a report on Comicbook.com. “When I heard about Infinity War (and Avengers 4) and the direction that they’re heading, I did have this moment of realizing, oh, wow, there’s a bit of a déjà vu for me with the Lost franchise. We are hitting that (Lost) Season 4 space where everything’s about to shift, and you’re about to lose the solid ground underneath you. And (Ant-Man and the Wasp), of course, will play a part in that.”
Avengers 4 is scheduled for release in May 2019. The film will undergo a few weeks of reshoots in a few months, and will serve as a significant conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, according to Disney chief Bob Iger.
