Assam brides to get Rs 40,000 to buy gold


GUWAHATI, March 6: The financial assistance under the Assam government’s ‘Arundhati’ scheme will be enhanced to Rs.40, 000, announced finance minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in his budget speech at the Assam Legislative Assembly today.
Earlier, brides from the state got Rs. 30, 000 under the flagship scheme of the state government. Finance minister Sarma announced today that the newlyweds would get Rs. 40, 000 in lieu of 1 tola gold.
“The financial assistance under ‘Arundhati’ will be enhanced to Rs. 40,000. A sum of Rs.150 Crore has been allocated for this scheme in Budget 2020-21,” said Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The benefit under this scheme has been extended to all brides coming from families which have less than Rs. 5 lakh annual income and who opt for formal registration of marriages under the Special Marriages Act, 1954. (Agencies)
