KOHIMA, JUNE 10: Nagaland BJP president Temjen Imna Along today broke his silence on the internal crisis in the State BJP in the aftermath of the alleged ‘undemocratic’ removal of incumbent district unit presidents since June 2020.
The presidents of 7 district BJP units during their last interaction with the media in Kohima on May 5, 2021 while reaffirming their allegations against Along of removing almost all the district presidents, except Wokha and Kiphire, with his ‘yes-man’ had demanded his removal as State BJP president.
Maintaining that they had been duly elected as the presidents of the district units as per the constitution of the party, the disgruntled leaders claimed that the district officials are unable to function properly because they are not sure when the State president would remove them. “We are apprehensive and unable to work wholeheartedly for the uplift of the party”, they had said.
However, breaking his silence, State BJP president Along today said “our party is a high-command party, and our high-command has put me as the State BJP president. And, as long as the high-command authorizes me to be the president of BJP Nagaland, I will continue”.
“Claims and counter claims of who they are or what they may be could be there but I still have respect for them as they have said they are still good workers of the party”, he said.
Whether they are presidents or not let them check in their own districts, he said.
On their allegations of removing them ‘unconstitutionally’ as the district president, Along said when the president of the district unit comes out saying we will not work (in) any BJP activities, till certain things happen is not acceptable as “we follow orders”.
“If one is not willing to work, what can I say”, said Along while maintaining that he has never thrown them out of the party.
“They are still my party men and members of BJP Nagaland. We are grateful that they are there. It keeps us to be wiser and one step ahead because in political party if these kinds of upheavals doesn’t happen than it’s not a political party (sic)”, he said. Reiterating that such upheavals are a test of the chair of president, Along said the institution of the president doesn’t belong to me but to the BJP, led by the national BJP president JP Nadda.
On the claims of the removed presidents having a certificate issued by the party of being duly elected president, Along said “I also have an election certificate too… the day I am asked to step down, I will go”.
“We are a high-command national party and our high-command knows the best decision”, Along said, adding that he is also the high-command of the party in Nagaland and they are my faithful karyakartas of the BJP.
