Kohima, January 22: Coming back strong in the second match of the league round of 9th North East Dr T Ao Trophy being played at IG Stadium Kohima on Wednesday, Arunachal Pradesh managed to hold defending champions Manipur to a draw and share a point each.
Starting off strongly, Arunachal stunned scoring first in the 27th minute through Charu Lalum but Manipur responded quickly with the equalizer in the next three minutes through M Clinton Singh.
Thereafter, neither side managed to make any further breakthrough and ended the match tied 1-1.
In the second match of the day, host Nagaland earned their second full points to lead Group A with 6 points.
Nagaland thrashed Tripura by 13 goals to nil with skipper Khwetelhi Thopi and forward Rhitsho Mero both scoring a hat-trick each.
Mero opened the floodgates in the 10th minute while Thopi netted three consecutive goals in the 23rd, 44th and 45th minute. Mero added his second goal and fifth for the team in the injury added time to move to breather.
Nagaland continued to hammer eight more goal in the second half with Haotingmang Haokip scoring the sixth in the 46th minute followed by Mero adding two goals in the 55th and 69th minutes.
Sinenlo Kath found the ninth goal in the 70th minute, Ratobe N. Poireng scored the 10th in the 78th minute followed by Thopi’s fourth and 11th for the team in the 88th minute and Mero’s fifth goal in the 89th minute while substitute Kethosilie Zatsu (16) sealed the match with the 13th goal in the added time of the match to register a comprehensive 13-0 win.
With today’s win, host Nagaland has confirmed their berth in the semi-final knock out round of the tourney from Group A.
This is second humiliating loss for Tripura as they lost the first match against defending champs Manipur by 11 goals on Monday. (Page News Service)
