Kohima, March 5: Hectic preparation is underway for the 12th edition of Open Naga Wrestling 2019 organized by Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) on March 7 at Kohima local ground.
The meet will be hosted by Angami Sports’ Association (ASA) and managed by Botsa Baptist Church.
Altogether 67 wrestlers will vie for the coveted title. Apart from Naga wrestlers, the 12th edition will also witness professional wrestlers – one from US, 3 from Myanmar, 2 from Jharkhand, besides the local wrestlers.
Rung Lian Ceu is the reigning US & Myanmar Wrestling Champion. Two wrestlers from Jharkhand includes Aryan Panwar and Sagar. Aryan Panwar is Asian junior silver medalist (135 kg) while Sagar is national bronze medalist (105 Kg) of Greco-Roman style.
The participants from Myanmar are: Thawng Tling, Mang Hnin Thang and Tluang Lel Thang.
Meanwhile, Minister for Higher & Technical Education Temjen Imna Along will be the special guest while Nagaland Khadi & Village Industries Board chairman Dr. Neiphrezo Keditsu will be the honoured guest. The inaugural function will start from 8:30 am onwards.
All India Traditional Wrestling & Pankration Federation (AITWPF) secretary general Shailendra Kumar Pathak will release NWA journal volume 2 during the inaugural session while Myanmar group will make a special presentation.
Meanwhile, on March 6, all the wrestlers have been asked to report at the ground at 2 pm while all the tournament officials have been requested to report at Hotel Japfii Kohima at 2 pm.
The champion will receive a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh while the second position will pocket Rs 1.50 lakh. The third and fourth position will receive Rs 1 lakh and Rs 70,000 respectively. The quarterfinalists will get Rs 10,000 each and the losing pre-quarterfinalists will also receive Rs 5000 each. The best tactic wrestler will pocket Rs 10,000.
Meanwhile, NWA has called for interactive session with the visiting teams from US, Myanmar and mainland India on March 6 at 4 pm at Hotel Japfii Kohima.
All the unit office bearers of ASA, CWA and ZWA including legislators and media persons have been requested to join the fellowship programme to promote wrestling together.
