52nd ASA wrestling meet on March 16

Kohima, February 19: The Angami Sports Association (ASA) is gearing up to hold its 52nd Meet in the form of senior Naga style wrestling on March 16 at Khouchiezie (Local Ground) Kohima.
ASA President, Lhoubeizo Kesiyie made the announcement during a press conference held in presence of his officials at Chekrovolu Hall in Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) complex here.
He said that ASA is one of the oldest sports associations in the Angami region which is 57 years old as it was formed in 1967. The gap of 4-5 years is because of the biannual meet in the initial stage.
He said that the four units ASA – Northern Angami Sports Association (NASA), Southern Angami Sports Association (SASA), Western Angami Youth Organization (WAYO) and Chakhroma Youth Organization (CYO) will be sending 15 wrestlers each totaling to 60 to compete in the highly anticipated event.
To participate in the ASA meet, a wrestler has to first compete at their respective khel (sector), followed by village level competition and respective the range, he said.
A total of Rs 10 lakh has been earmarked for the championship, of which the champion will receive Rs 2.5 lakh, runners-up Rs 1.7 lakh, third Rs 1.3 lakh, fourth Rs 1 lakh, 4 losing quarter finalist Rs 20,000 each and best tactic wrestler Rs 15,000, he said.
Kesiyie also informed that beside the above mentioned prizes, all the wrestlers would also be provided with participation incentive, which is being done for the first time.
He said that around 15-16,000 spectators are expected to witness the ASA meet on March 16, he expressed gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer of Kohima Smart City, K. Theunuo for granting permission to conduct the event in the Local Ground.
Of the 60 wrestlers from the championship, 18 wrestlers will be selected to represent ASA in the forthcoming Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) meet scheduled to be held on March 26.
Meanwhile, asked on the risk factor involved for spectators to sit in the yet to be completed galleries of under construction Kohima Local Ground, Kesiyie said that CEO Theunuo has assured that all the four corners of the ground will be completed to accommodate around 6-7000 people while ground leveling will also done, where around 9000 chairs will be placed to accommodate a total the 15-16,000 wrestling fans.
However, he also asserted in order not to compromise with the safety of the spectators, ASA would also take its own safety measures in the galleries.
The ticket price will be Rs 2000 for donor, Rs 500 for chair and Rs 100 for gallery, he said while appealing the people to come and witness the Angami wrestling meet 2024.
