4th Khelo India University Games wrestling event in Kohima from today

Kohima, February 22: Stage is set for the 4th Khelo India University Games, Ashtalakshmi (Wrestling event) at Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS) Kohima.
The Department of Youth Resource and Sports (DYRS), Nagaland is fully geared to host the three-day event from February 23 to 25, said Secretary of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), Anthony Ngullie while addressing a press conference at the venue this evening.
Assam is the main host of Khelo India University Games while all the other northeastern states, except Manipur have been allotted an event each to host in the respective state with Nagaland to host Wrestling event, he said.
All preparations are done and the arena is set, he said, adding that around 200 athletes and 80 officials to conduct the event have arrived in Kohima.
Altogether 11 hotels and six home stays have been arranged for the comfort of them, he said.
DYRS Director Kethosituo Sekhose maintained that this is the fourth edition of the Games and it is being hosted by different states on turn basis but this time the Central Government decided to let North East host the event with Assam as the overall host. The competition for the wrestling event will be Greco-Roman and Freestyle for men while women will compete only in freestyle in ten different categories starting from 57 kgs to 130 Kgs super heavyweight, he said.
Meanwhile, Nagaland is hosting the national level event for the first time but there are no athletes of Nagaland University participating in the event.
Asked for the reason, Sekhose said Nagaland University had to participate in the zonal university competition to qualify but it did not do so because of which there are no athletes this time.
He also clarified that there is no wild card entry system to the competition as the participants as declared by All India Universities (AIU), he said.
In this regard, Sekhose said the government and the department would henceforth monitor to ensure that Nagaland University participates in the zonal level competition of the university games in the coming years.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio will grace the commencement programme of the wrestling event at 3:30 PM tomorrow at IG Stadium.
