4th Capt. N. Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament begins; Vanguard FC blanks Ninezone Peren

Kohima, September 10: Altogether 24 teams from all over the state are competing in the 4th edition of Captain (Late) Neikezhakho Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament organized by 9 Assam Rifles under the aegis of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) at Local Ground here.
Declaring the tourney open today, IGAR (N) Maj Gen P C Nair said that Assam Rifles has made the memorial championship an annual feature in honour of the brave Naga soldier Captain N Kenguruse, who sacrificed his life in the defence of the nation during the Kargil War.
“We also aim to promote the game of football in the State,” he said.
Among other dignitaries, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, MLA Zale Neikha, DC Kohima R Soundararajan and Neiselie Kenguruse, father of Late Captain Kenguruse were also present during the inaugural function.
The champion will bag cash award of Rs 1.7 lakh with trophy and citation runners-up Rs 80,000 with trophy and citation.
Captain Kenguruse joined the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun (Uttarkhand) on July 1997 and was commissioned into 2nd Rajputana on 12th Dec 1998.
Captain Kenguruse who is a source of inspiration of all ranks of the Armed Forces was the Ghatak Platoon Commander during the attack on Area Black Rich in the Drass Sector on the night of 28th June 1999.
Under the intense mortar & automatic fire, which resulted in heavy casualties, Captain Kenguruse sustained splinter injury in his abdomen.
He was awarded with one of the nation’s highest gallantry award the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.
In the inaugural match, defending champion Vanguard FC Tseminyu defeated Nine Zone Peren Football Team by 5-0.
Playing 80th minute game, Rhitsho Mero opened the floodgates in 6th while skipper added two more goals in 21st and 26th minute to end the first half with 3 goals lead. Vekhruto Resu and Nyithong Magh also scored a goal each in the 46th and 58th minute.
