Vanguard FC retains trophy for second time
Kohima, September 21: Vanguard Football Club Tseminyu retained the champion’s trophy of the Capt. N. Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament organized by 9th Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(N) at Kohima Local ground.
In the final match, Vanguard FC defeated Nerhema Village Football Club by 2-0. They are also the champion’s of the third edition held last year.
Dominating the game, Yhunshalo Kemp scored the first goal in 34th minute while Sinenlo Kath confirmed the win doubling the score in 78th minute.
Winning the championship Vanguard received cash award of Rs 1.7 lakh with glittering trophy, medals and citation while runners-up Nerhema Village FC bagged Rs 80,000 with trophy, medals and citation. The two semi-finalist Green Club Zunheboto and Naga Terriers also received Rs 25,000 each
The individual category awards were:
Golden Glove – Medophrezo Kezieo of Nerhema Village FC – cash award of Rs 10,500
Golden Boot – Yhunshalo Kemp of Vanguard FC for scoring 10 goals – cash award of Rs 10,500
Player of the Tournament – Rhitsho Mero of Vanguard FC – cash award of Rs 8500.
GOC-in-C Eastern Command, Lt. Gen. Abhay Krishna gracing the valedictory function as the chief guest gave away the awards to the winners.
In his address, the general officer said the tournament showcases the commitment of Assam Rifles towards developing sports culture among the youths of Nagaland.
Recalling the sacrifices made by Late Captain Kenguruse, he said the award of Maha Vir Chakra epitomizes the heroism that this brave son of Nagaland displayed during Operation Vijay in 1999.
He therefore said that the tournament is aimed at fusing the indomitable Naga spirit with the passion of youth for football so that the sporting talent of the State can get an opportunity to be selected as professional footballers.
The Army Commander connected with the spectators by delivering most part of his speech in Nagamese, which was received positively by the august gathering. (Page News Service)
