2nd KTC Cup: Vanguard defeats defending champ Khriekesal New Market move into semi-finals

Kohima, August 28: Defending champion of Kohima Town Club Cup Khriekesa Football Club Meriema exited from the second edition as Vanguard FC Tseminyu and New Market Football Club booked their semi-final in today’s two matches of the tourney.
Vanguard FC Tseminyu overcame defending champion’s Khriekesa FC Meriema in a close-shave last quarter final match, which was decided through 30 minutes extra time as the teams were locked in 1-1 draw during the stipulated 90 minutes play.
The first half remained at goalless draw while skipper Yhunshalo Kemp the lead for Vanguard in 65th minute but Akuo-u Ciesotsu managed to find the much needed equalizer for the defending champs in 87th minute to take the match to extra 30 minutes for the decider.
Khriekesa did manage to break the deadlock within the first minute of extra time through Vimelie Chasie but skipper Yhunshalo not only saved his team with the much needed equalizer for Vanguard in 116th minute but also struck the wining goal injury added time to over through the defending champs. He also became the first hat-trick scorer of the tournament.
Velukho Rakho, Akuo-u Ciesotsu and captain Seyiekhrietuo Suohu of Khriekesa FC Meriema were cautioned for unsporting behavior during the match.
Earlier, playing a closely contested 3rd quarter final match, New Market FC defeated United 16 FC 2-1. New Market opened the account with the help of skipper Rhitsho Mero in 23rd minute but Vareiyang found the equalizer for United 16 in 31st minute to end the first half in 1-1 draw.
However, efforts from both sides to break the deadlock in the breather half went in vain until Mero struck his second and winning goal for the runners-up of the first edition of the cup in 80th minute through penalty shot.
After winning today’s matches, New Market FC and Vanguard FC Tseminyu will clash against each other semi-finals tomorrow.
