Dimapur, January 11: Poang Lum Mini Hornbill 2019 entered the second day under the theme ‘Lamshok’ (Treaty) at Loyem Memorial Ground Tuensang today. The special guest of the programme was Secretary, Tourism, T. Mhabemo Yanthan while the tribal guest was T. Seopi, President, USLP. Lima Onen, OSD to Chief Minister was the host and Yongching Khumla, Joint Secretary, Health and Family Welfare was the co-host of the celebration.
Speaking on the occasion, the special guest stated that the event is being held to give a glimpse of the hornbill festival for those who cannot make it come to Kisama for the main Hornbill Festival. Since Tuensang is the only district in Nagaland with four major tribes namely, Chang, Khiamniungan, Sangtam and Yimchunger it is only befitting to have a common festival organized to affirm and maintain the bond of brotherhood, he said.
Nagas have inherited a rich culture and tradition from their ancestors which has remained hidden from the rest for world for many years but in recent times the Hornbill festival is playing a major role in opening up to the rest of the world, he added.
He said that tourism is a major industry in Nagaland and incorporating all the tribal festival, events and tourist destinations etc the Nagas are the real stake holder of this priceless intellectual property and by proper streamlining it will have a tremendous potentials impact in the present and future Naga Economy. By pulling in tourist the Department can develop the infrastructures, however local populace should initiate for the avenues or the attraction by building our self a peaceful society for tourism to flourish, he stated.
Kekongchim, President ENPO in his short speech highlighted on the aims and objective of the festival which is to build bridges irrespective of tribes and nomenclatures and maintain peace amongst the neighbours.
T. Seopi, President, USLP also hoped that the Poang Lum mini Hornbill festival would be a channel towards a new bond and be a harbinger to usher betterment of the community and the society as a whole.
Welcome address was given by Limaonen, the host while Poanglum Mini hornbill greeting was pronounced by the co-host of the event.
Sangtam Cultural troupe and Sangtak Cultural troupe presented traditional items on the occasion. Other highlights included traditional greased pole climbing, cross bow target shooting, hapbung Race (Local wooden wheeled wooden car), stilt Bamboo race), traditional fire making, pork fat eating competition and Chang strongest man competition etc which will be followed by the Chang Various Artist Musical night.
