Kohima, November 18: Living up to the name of being the first champion and also five time runners-up, old time favorites – New Market XI today confirmed their semi-final berth in the ongoing silver jubilee edition of Classic Cup, an annual football event organized by Classic Club Kohima, at local ground here.
Playing a closely contested third quarter final of the tourney, New Market XI won against Football Club Pochury by a second half solitary goal coming through the boots of Johnny Rite.
In the first half, which went blank, FC Pochury dominated the game but lacked finishing touch while New Market striker Gideon Leo did get an open opportunity in the 15th minute but his shot from inside the box was denied by rival custodian Hobi Twang. He did penetrate into the rival danger zone within the next couple of minutes but this time his shot went wide off the mark. Custodian Tsang denied another sure goal attempt of Leo in the 32nd minute, while a minute before the lemon break New Market custodian Eshong Konyak blocked a target shot of Jiziitho Nyuwi.
Four minutes into the breather, a long cross from Ketholezo Sophie was headed for the nets by Kezhose Mathew but goal keeper Tsang was alert to intercept the ball. In the 55th minute Johnny failed to collect a free chance off a long cross from Mughahuto Chishi, while his left footed shot in the 57th minute rolled out of play barely missing the post.
Nonetheless, Johnny finally found the nets in the 60th minute for the first champions of Classic Cup (1995) off a cross from Ketholezo Sophie to place the team into the semi-final.
A yellow card each was shown to Atsiatho Nyuthe of FC Pochury and Johnny Ritse in the 42nd and 46th minutes of play.
