20th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy: Viswemi FC knocks out Meriema VYO to enter final

Kohima, October 17: Debutants Viswemi Football Club of Viswema village today surprised football fans as they defeated strong title contenders Meriema VYO to move into the final of the 20th edition of NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy played at the local ground here.
Viswemi FC defeated the last year’s runners-up Meriema Village Youth Organization (MVYO) in a closely contested second semi-final match 2-1 in extra time after the teams were locked 1-1 in the stipulated 90 minutes play.
MVYO made a strong start and almost took the lead in the second minutes but Kenei Viluo header was thwarted by rival defender following custodian Kevime Vitsü failure to collect the ball. Viswemi FC also missed an opportunity in the fourth minute when Kelenguto James Kechü made a long cross towards unmarked Metol Neikha but failed to control the ball.
However, Viswemi took the lead in the 25th minute through Kelengol Toso taking advantage of a weak defence clearance. The very next minute, MVYO midfielder Vikeduolie Lhousi struck a power shot from the danger zone but was denied by custodian Kevime, who also saved another shot of Khrieneituo Kezie-o in the 44th minute.
After the lemon break, Viswemi scorer Kelengol was yellow carded for unsporting behavior in the 56th minute. Substitute Kelethuto Kin of Viswemi left footer shot was pushed for a corner by custodian Neimezo Houzha in the 66th minute.
Six minutes MVYO striker Keneisezo Keditsu equalized as he headed in a cross from Khrieneituo Kezie-o.
Playing the first half of extra time (15+15 minutes), neither sides were able to make any decisive move but Viswemi broke the deadlock within seconds of the second half extra time as substitute player Vilu Theyo netted the second goal for the team.
In the 115th, MVYO faced another disappointment as Keneisezo’s weak header from inside the D’box off cross from Ruokuovolie was neatly collected by rival custodian.
The final will be played on October 19 at 1 pm.
