Kohima, July 3: The four-day long 17th Nagaland State Chess Championship 2018 organized by Nagaland Chess Association (NCA) was formally declared open by its president P. Khezhie at Red Cross Society conference hall here today.
Altogether 48 players from seven districts – Dimapur, Kohima, Zunheboto, Phek, Mokokchung, Wokha and Peren are competing in the championship with 19 boys and girls competing in U-17 and U-14 categories.
In his address, he said that game of chess is one of the most popular games in the world and it is believed to have originated in India and than to the new world.
Today, chess is a multi dimensional activity with its ever expanding horizon, he said adding that it has undergone many transformations in regard to nomenclature, moves and power of certain pieces, but its fundamentals still remain the same.
Khezhie said that, NCA would select the top four players to represent the state at the national level competition.
The championship will conclude on July 6. Former national champion and All India Chess Federation qualified arbiter, Mughaho Awomi is the chief arbiter of the championship.
